& International CB Radio QSL Contest! Page
National CB Radio E-mail group:
When: January 21-22, 2006.
When: 2 PM EST to 2 PM EST A whopping 24 Hour Endurance Contest How: The contest is simple and the most challenging to date: 1 DIVISION (ALL AROUND).
The Premise to our contest is and always has been SIMPLE! Contact as many folks on AM and SSB (*within the legal 40 channels) as possible within the 24 hour time. You do not have to compete for the entire 24 hours. Compete as much or as little as possible. If you want to have a partner help you, that is A OK! Tag Teams are good, but they have to use the same radio! THIS CONTEST IS BASED ON THE NUMBER OF FOLKS YOU SPEAK WITH, AND NOT BASED ON DISTANCE (as with Amateur Radio Contests). So, in other words, he/she who contacts the most WINS!
Note: Whether there is enforcement of this rule or not, please note the 155.3 mile limit for SSB is still in effect (Part 95). Just be careful when contesting on SSB and doing skip.
How do I tell folks that I am in this great WORLD CB RADIO CHAMPIONSHIP? You need to call out any way possible but after you give out your handle/SSB ID#, you MUST say the word CONTEST. That will signify that you are a contester.
Please spread the word about the contest to any cbers you know. It's a BLAST. It is the Daytona / Indianapolis 500 of CB Radio Contests anywhere. They do not have to be a member of the CB radio yahoogroup, but we strongly suggest that they do get subscribed to make it easier. If you know of anybody that is going to contest, please inform them of this or be the person to report their current progress/final results to this list.
How do I log folks?: Get several pieces of paper:
#1. Write down the number of the contact 1, 2, 3, etc.
#2. Write down the time of the contact
#3. Location/Handle/First Name/SSB# of the person you contacted
#4. Channel you spoke with them on. Also, note if it was on AM or SSB (sideband).
THIS LOG IS DUE IN MY U.S. MAILBOX BY NO LATER THAN 1 WEEK AFTER THE CONTEST (the following SATURDAY). I will privately email out my home address to all contesters after the event. ANY LOGS RECEIVED AFTER THAT SATURDAY WILL NOT COUNT!
Can I discuss my progress during the contest? Yes most definitely, please report all information and results first to this yahooogroup periodically and MOST DEFINITELY at the end of the 24 hour CB Enduro. _cbradio@yahoogroups.com_ (mailto:cbradio@yahoogroups.com)
Is there any time during the contest for get togethers? YEP. As per our tradition, our yahoogroup chat room will be open from 7-9 PM for group chat. Come join in and see if you can get more contacts this way.
What will I win??? Since there is going to be one and only World Champion this year (as opposed to two or more in the past), that person will receive the traditional Winners Framed Certificate and another member has pledged to donate a 70s era (I think) Walkie Talkie or CB (that donator-please reconfirm that prize).
Past winners have also gotten a T-Shirt and last year $20.
THAT IS ALL I HAVE FOR THE SIMPLE EXPLAINATION OF THE RULES. Now let me know who else is going to contest. Sign ups can even happen during the contest, but we really want them before the 2 PM EST deadline!
If you have any questions or comments, please send them to the group now!
Doug responded by saying, "At 51ssb 73 Doug

And so it went into Sunday between Maxwell and Doug. Meanwhile, Minuteman (Steve M.) was continuing to increase his lead in the AM category and trying to win 3 AM competitons in a row. The surprise of the contest was the disappearance of Raymond Fink. He would not be contesting this year, but did send a message on Sunday.
Ah, Boy! Looks like this contest was over last night. We had an eruption from a sunspot that triggered a geomagnetic storm that likely shut down the band. Low turnout, low contact numbers...sometimes feces happens. I'll have to pontificate on the next month's contest rules a bit. I may have to take a 2950 with me....
On Sunday, Maxwell reported that he had 161 SSB contacts (almost breaking the record in contacts for the SSB contest.)
In the end, the winners were: Minuteman (AM)-over 100 and Maxwell (SSB)-167 contacts.
The 2004 World CB Radio Championships became a battle between Doug Schwinn, Raymond Fink, and Maxwell. I, Keith T. (listmaster), asked for some testamonials, in order to bring in some more competitors. Popular Communications had a nice article about the contest and how important our group was by monitoring and using 39 LSB during Emergencies.
Raymond Fink came back with a few good responces to up the antie
On contest day, there were the following entries...
The setback for this year was Mark Wilde who had to back out due to a personal move.
Contest day began on Saturday the 17th with a rousing quote by Soug Schwinn, " 181 Doug in Colorado has "Got Game." and with the listmaster offering this following starting command, " Ladies and Gentlemen of this here Yahoogroup.
And the competitors were off on another exciting adventure and praying the DX contitions would favor them. Ray Fink reported, 13 contacts, a slow start, but hang on for I'm about to hit the Nitro boost!." Doug reported, "And I made a contact in Nome AK Doug, 181 GJ,CO.(Ray Fink also commented shortly thereafter that he too had talked with the man in Nome.
Ray Fink's contacts increased to "36" and Ernie Rice was kicking butt with "125 on SSB" in the early morning hours of Sunday. It later was corrected to show, " 137 after a recheck of my logs" (Rice).
That scared Ray Fink. Later on he said, "Dang, I've some work to do! (eh, eh, eh)."
Ernie Rice continued to increase his lead by having "151 now", (he would not stop).
Doug Schwinn reported, I'm at 45 SSB and 1 AM, Band seems to be opening up some to the East from Colorado. 151, D___, I'm getting spanked."
Meanwhile, Craig's numbers on AM increased to "70" and Maxwell said, "As of 8 PM My SSB count was 89...Skip is still going strong this evening, Lots of Michigan, Indiana, W. Virginia, Ohio...Mostly From the East Quadrant. Back to the shack 2 do more DXing. 73 WA 125 Maxwell" The band those two days was excellent and really opened up for the folks who contested. However, towards the end, it looked like the AM contest was in a DEAD HEAT!
AM Contest Bulletin! Sport should have over 100 contacts by now and at last report 1:20 PM EST Minuteman from Northern Indiana had 108 and is trying for 120.
After some good advertisement/write-up by Alan Dixon on the magazine Popular Communications, the renamed contest (World CB Radio Championships) was in serious preparation. On January 18th the contest began in spite of bad conditions. Here are some reports from the competitors
Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Diodes!!!!
In the absence of Listmaster Keith, it is my honor to
declare the 2003 QSL contest officially underway.
All contestants are reminded to check in with this
group periodically with conditions and progress, and
encouraged to join the chatroom at 1900 (7:00 PM)
eastern time tonight.
Good CB'ing to all!!!!

made two contacts. The second one? None other than Doug. Mr. 181

Bonecrusher is second with 14
Indycar third with 8.

10:13 PM EST report:
Conditions here are down to local only. Having a hard
time finding any traffic, so I'm going to give it a
break for a while and try later. I'm just in it for
the fun now anyway; too much happening around the
house to be serious about competing this year.
Mark Wilde
KHD8472/WT2901
While Minuteman (Steve M.) and his wife Fluffy (Jan M.) were dominating, here was the Spacecase report:
I had a busy day on saturday not much time to spend on the radio! What time
I did spend, I noticed conditions were not the best. I did make 3 contacts
last night which were locals. Its 6am on sunday now I am gonna give it
another shot today. OK heres my strategy for this year........... Wait till
the last day when every one gets burned out and tired and loose their voices
and then early in the morning catch the skip cycle as the sun rises and make
contacts galore! The only reason I am disclosing my plan is that most of you
competitors out there either stayed up too late and will be sleep the
morning away, talked too much and lost your voices, or your radios just
stopped working (workin them just too hard).
So as I defrost my antenna and the ice falls, listen out there in radioland
and you might just hear Space Case on the airwaves!
P.S. Fink beware
Space Case is in the place!
Regards, Space Case 242 Northern Indiana
It's about 10:20 here and we're still plugging away. At 71ssb and 16am. I
hear the "Fink" all the time out here. Lots of boys with big noisey toys
making it hard to communicate. One IDIOT has a robot voice and can't
understand a damned word he's saying. You'd figure he'd fade out but he hangs
in solid on my channel. Pure noise, Like "Heavy Metal"
Doug 1L181
Finally at 2 PM EST (the usual finish time), the 2003 Contest ended.
Here are the results
AM & FRS (only competitor in FRS with 10)-Minuteman: 50 (AM)
Others in AM: Bonecrusher (26 contacts), Doug S (16 contacts), Spacecase (15 contacts), Indycar (13 contacts)
Sideband (winner) Doug S. 91 contacts. Second: Raymond Fink (76 contacts), Indycar (3 contacts), and Mark Wilde(2 contacts)
Fluffy won the Channel 19 contest with 80 contacts
This contest was a very interesting one. Same and different individuals were competing in this area, including more members of the Michiana CB Emergency Service. Raymond Fink
put his name into the ring with this message.
Subject: Re: [cbradio] Send early entry list here for CB Contest
Hey Space Case,
You are looking a little blue there. Hope it's not anything you got in the mail. Is that you I see in the cross hairs?
Fink
Mark Wilde also joined, as did Spacecase who had this to say on Contest day.
I have a road trip to do today. Heading for the windy city of chicago. This will be the first time I actually used my broken down mobile cb two way communicator in a contest. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I wonder what performance my broken down radio would do if I parked by lake michigan using the windy city to blow my transmit world wide!
Regards,Space Case (as I hit the door!)
The contest began on Saturday and lasted till Sunday. But to everyone's surprise, the Fink was nowhere to be found....
As the Fink was no where to be found, the Captain of the Michiana CB Emergency Service (Blondie) and Dart Player( Asst. Capn). went ahead in their respective contests: Ch 19/FRS). Chris Shelton also competed in the FRS division and this is what he said, "
Hey all:
I'm having a terrible time making any contacts on FRS.
I'm at my home with an Audiovox FRS-1000 base station
that I had good luck with before, but this afternoon,
I can't seem to keep anybody on long enough to get a
name and where they are from. I have an interstate
about 1 mile from my house and figured I would make
many contacts from there as I had in the past. Its no
panning out. I think I'm going to hop in may car and
head up to the top of a hill with my Radio Shack
mobile FRS radio and see if I can do any better."
Mark Wilde had trouble but kept going on with the sideband contest.
"Well, it's T+2:20, and conditions are not that good in
Washington. I've been working mainly 30-40 LSB off
and on, and getting serious DX from all over the
country and a little from Canada, but just can't seem
to get through the DX. Only 2 solid contacts thus
far, both from Southern California. Back to the radio
and still trying, until the skip dies.
73,
Mark Wilde" Keith, I still sit at 5 contacts SSB. Just didn't get
on the base this morning, although at 7:00 AM local
time the skip seemed to be floating in very well. 3
hours of sleep at that time dictated that I fall back
in bed...which I did! I woke up at 10:45 local, which
in west coast time means 15 minutes remaining in the
contest.
So I sit at 5 SSB, and I'll get my report in the mail
to you Tuesday. (No mail on Sunday, no mail tomorrow,
MLK Jr. Day.)
WHERE IS FINK??????
Mark Wilde"
Anyway, there was one individual who claimed to have competed and won, but that individual
was putting on a big hoax. But in spite of a bit of problems.. here are the results
AM-Spacecase, Astronaut
FRS-DartPlayer, Chris Shelton,
CB 19-Blondie

And so the contest prepared for 2003 with a NEW name-the World CB Radio Championships!
This contest ranked as one of the best contests and one of the most controversial contests ever in the short history of the International CB QSL Contest. Notices were sent out to various groups-including the Legal CB/FRS list (which protested all the way to the FCC). After some calming down of the host and 24 hours of worry, the contest plans continued on.
One of the biggest challenges of the contest happened between two gentlemen-- Spacecase and Raymond Fink.
Here is what they had to say ahead of the contest....

To whom shall see these presents; greeting.
Let it be known that The Fink just returned from Lowe's home improvement warehouse with certain materials for the construction of a 3 element Yagi beam antenna. The Moonraker is still laying on the ground with some parts missing and whereabouts unknown. Therefore, it was deemed necessary to partake in the construction of a "home-brew" to facilitate the directional intensification of subject's radio frequency transmissions. Woe is he that dares tread on The Fink's plans for domination! (Got that Space Case?) I'll take your bet, and you're gonna regret, 'cause I'm the best that's ever been!

I have to leave town for the day. I should be back in the later part of the evening, like around 8pm.

Farthest AM contact was Jamaca
SSB is 103
Farthest SSB contact was Ireland
I was battling with canada and the buckeye, making conditions rough on me :)
It was alot of fun running two base stations at one time (one on sideband and the other on AM)
On side band I was running a RCI 2990 w/ Astatic echomax 2000 and a M107 40 ft in the air.
On Am I was running a Galaxy DX22B w/ night k eagle and an Antron 99 w/ground plane 50 ft in the air.

Hello to all the tired souls,
I had exactly 100 contacts in the sideband operations.
Some details:
First: 933 Nebraska "Gary"
Last: 909 Black Diamond, Washington "Brian"
Notables: no # Manaus (amazon jungle) Brazil "Epitacio"
511 Denmark "Arne"
Night Hawk Luxembourg (europe) "Roby"
**15RF001 Switzerland "Peter" (mobile station)
803 Hilo, Hawaii "Max"
** this is without question the most notable contact. Fellow in his car in Switzerland where he says it's "very cold and snowy" Wonder where the reputation came from? He couldn't believe he was contacting USA from his car. This contact took approx. 20 min to complete because of conditions and noise (both man-made and natural static) on frequency.
I did include contacts missing name and/or numbers. Some contacts would not divulge names, and some did not use any "call sign" (numbers). Only solid contacts are included in my tally. Anyone lost on the first exchange was deleted from the list. If I heard them repeat my call, I included them. If they called me and I returned but did not get any response then I considered it "no contact"
Interesting note. I had 18 contacts in the last 30 minutes with the majority in the last 15 minutes. The real string came when I switched to USB. I worked LSB for all but the last 45 minutes. Reason? The AM carrier tone is not a problem in the LSB mode. Switched to USB when things got quiet. It's amazing how many stations are "scanning the band" in search of good radio contacts.
I appreciate Space Case acknowledging having heard me. I did tend to have lengthy conversations with folks that didn't understand the urgency of contesting. Courtesy is number one in radio. My original estimate of 300 to 400 contacts may have held if not working the regular 40. The frequencies I'm accustomed to using are dominated by folks that understand the quick nature of contact while in contest. I would like to be clear on one thing: KEITH, thank you for the way you structured the contest (especially SSB). I would never have met any of the operators I found, nor would I have "wasted time" on the regular 40 in SSB operation. What a learning experience!
I look foward to hearing everyone's notes on the contest, seeing you folks in the chat room, and DOING IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR!

There was some interest leading up to the contest. Hillibilly of
Stateland CBers of New York agreed to advertise the contest at his group's cb
jamboree and a few others make supportive comments-but overall, it was
uncertain of just how many competitors there would be.
Final previews were sent out just before the second contest started
which generated a lot more interest. People began to join in and give their
support from all over the country.
The contest began on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 at the scheduled time of 2

Competitors began to send in info on where they were, the channel they
were on, and how they were doing.

contest being a success (in spite of low turnout), plans were made to
continue the contest into 2000. (I will give the story of the 2000 contest a
little later on).

latest count as of 5:45am sunday feb. 21 Made alot of contacts with locals on
various channels throughout the night I found many little groups on different channels
. Most of the little groups were within a relatively close distance to each
person in the groups and with the frequencies clearing through out the nite it
was extremely noticeable the extra distance I was able to communicate to! 73's
